June Recap

Not a lot of movies this month, next month on the other hand will be bigger.

Movies:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows: Better then the first in every way. Though still kind of Micheal Bayish. Bebop and Rocksteady are the best things in the movie. C

Finding Dory: A great Pixar movie that’s just as good as Finding Nemo. A

Horrible Bosses 2: Didn’t see the first movie but I thought this one was funny. C-

Creed: A little long at times but a nice spinoff of the Rocky movies. I could listen to Fighting Stronger all day, it’s just so catchy and chilling. B

TV shows:

Steven Universe: Best cartoon on right now. A+

My Little Pony Friendship is Magic: Still good. A

The Loud House: A good reason to watch Nickelodeon again. A-

Voltron: Legendary Defender: The animators from Avatar still amaze me though the cliffhanger ending does lower it’s grade. B

Finding Dory Review

finding dory

Finding Dory at first seems to be a rehash of Finding Nemo. I was looking forward to it even if my expectation for lower, but after I saw it, I thought it was just as good as the first movie. Finding Dory is about Dory remembering her parents and trying to find them. Unfortunately her short-term memory loss makes her struggle. She gets separated from Marlin and Nemo and ends up in a aquarium. She meets with a octopus named Hank who helps her try to find her parents.

Now when I said that Finding Dory seems to be a rehash at first, that is sort of true but only for the first half. It’s honestly the only flaw I have with this movie and after the squid chase it turns into a new movie. The movie deals with disabilities. I like how it doesn’t teach you to get rid of them but to use them to your advantage.

The new characters are memorable. I liked how most of them have a disability just like Dory. Hank only has seven tentacles, Destiny has trouble seeing, and Bailey losing his echolocation. It makes them more relatable for Dory.

Let me tell you about my favorite thing in Finding Dory. I love the music! While I like the music from Finding Nemo I think this blows it away. Some of my favorite tracks are the main title, the migration song, and Shells. Thomas Newman’s score is just so chilling and beautiful to listen to and you can get sucked into it. It really helps make the emotional moments so much more impacting. I’m surprised that a sequel (other then Toy Story 2 and 3) to one of the most emotional Pixar movies was just as emotional as the first one.

I should also talk about the short Piper, Piper is incredibly cute and funny.

I’m not sure is this movie is better or worse then Finding Nemo but there very close. Finding Dory is a great sequel to a great Pixar movie and one of the best movies of 2016 so far.

Verdict:
+New characters
+The music
+Emotional
+Piper Short
-First half rehashes

Score: A+

Voltron: Legendary Defender Review

voltron

Voltron: Legendary Defender is a remake of the famous anime Voltron.  Five boys find five lion robots that combine into one giant robot. Now they must work together to fight evil.  It’s a simple though a little too familiar story.

The animation is great and helps make the action incredible. Most of the people working on this show worked on Avatar the Last Airbender and Legend of Korra. It clearly shows because the character designs make it  look like there characters from Avatar and Korra.

The characters are also good. I like how the lions represent the characters. Though the villain is just a generic take over the world type of villain and even the witch is just a generic witch character. I was very surprised finding out that Pidge was actually a girl. At first you’d think oh he’s played by an actress well so is Bart Simpson, but then it actually is a hint that Pidge is a female. When I saw the picture she had I thought it was Pidge and “his” girlfriend. Then it turns out that it’s her brother. I liked the flashbacks of how she came to be what she is now.

A problem I have is that the season ends on a cliffhanger. It’s not a bad cliffhanger, it just felt like an ending to the second to last episode of the season.

Despite the cliffhanger, Voltron is a fun action cartoon that get’s us excited for next season.

Verdict:
+Great Animation
+Action
+Good characters
+Pidge twist
-Familiar story
-Uninteresting villain
-Cliffhanger

Top 10 Favorite Gravity Falls Episodes

With summer beginning, I think it would be a good time  to show my top 10 favorite episodes of Gravity Falls.

10.Dungeons Dungeons and More Dungeons: I liked seeing Dipper and Ford Bond playing the game. J.K Simmons as Ford is a great choice. The reaction Mabel reacting to the rules of the game is hilarious. I will admit that Weird Al’s role in this episode was kind of weak compared his other cameos but it was still good.

9. Not What He Seems: This is pretty much everyone’s favorite episode when it came out. It would be a crime to leave this out. It does have problems that keep it from being number 1 or 2. My biggest problem is that Wendy only appears in only one shot, while it is a funny scene she should have been part of the gang throughout the whole episode. The best part of the episode is the last third. It was very intense, epic, and emotional. The reveal of the author of the journals is incredible and a great payoff. That shot where Ford reveals himself is still chilling today. Despite my problems with the episode it is epic change for the show and a nice introduction for a new character.

8. Weirdmageddon 2: Escape From Reality: While it doesn’t have the same epic feel like the previous or the next episode, it still is a good episode. It concludes to conflict between Dipper and Mabel and they finally come to age with growing up. Jon Stewart’s cameo was funny. The ending with all the surviving characters in the Mystery Shack was both awesome, funny, and made out excited for the finale.

7. Bottomless Pit!: Gravity Fall’s version of Treehouse of Horrors. Each story is creative and funny.  ” The story Trooth Ache! has a nice scene where Mabel who doesn’t like seeing his uncle lie (that’s gonna bite her in the butt later) had to lie in order to protect him. Grunkle Stan’s speech about life is one of the funniest and messed up scenes in the show. My favorite story was Grunkle Stan wins the football bowl. I want to see whole episode based on that.

6. Blendin’s Game: Soos is my favorite Gravity Falls character because of his humor and likable attitude which reminds me a lot of Ed from Ed Edd n Eddy. So don’t be surprised that this episode is on the list. What makes me really like this episode is that it’s shows how much Dipper and Mabel are willing to go to make Soos happy. The friendship between the twins and Soos is heartwarming and the joke with young Wendy thinking Dipper was cute was funny.  The Globnar game is only in the last third of the episode but it does lead to a very funny anti climatic joke. Blendin’s Game is a really fun episode even if there’s not a lot of reveals.

5. Tourist Trapped: I know this is the pilot but still a great pilot at that. What I really like about this episode is it’s mix of comedy and foreshadowing. For example, the scene where Dipper tells Mabel that her new boyfriend Norman is a zombie. He tries showing him a picture of a zombie but accidentally shows him a picture of gnomes. Later it turns out that Norman is actually gnomes disguised as a human. Nothing big in terms of mystery but a nice way to start the show.

4. Headhunters: This is mostly on my list for nostalgia due to it being the very first episode of Gravity Falls I saw. This episode did a great job introducing the plot of Gravity Falls to me. This episode surprisingly now has a lot more deep meaning to it now ever since Not What He seems came out. Back then you’d think Stan was upset about his wax figure having it’s head chopped off was of self pride. But now that we know that he has a brother makes it more heartbreaking. The twist with the wax figures being the culprits was clever and funny.

3. Weirdmageddon Part I: This episode has almost everything that I want in an Gravity Falls. The new intro was fantastic. The car chase climax with the weirdness bubbles was both badass, hilarious, and awesome. Wendy finally got some well deserved screen time and development. The only flaw I find with this episode is that Mabel was barely in it, check that, Kristin Schaal the voice of Mabel doesn’t have any lines. Its like having an episode of Ed Edd n Eddy without Edd or not speaking, it just doesn’t seem right. It’s only a nitpick, this episode was just so awesome.

2. Into the Bunker: Until number 1 came out this was my favorite episode of the series. They finally give Wendy a lot of screen time. She did so much here like opening the bunker door, finding out the secret tunnel, and spotting the imposter who we thought was the author. Mark Hamill was great and creepy as the shapeshifter. The climax between Dipper, Wendy vs the shapeshifter was great and intense. The ending was very touching and a nice close to the whole Dipper’s crush on Wendy arc (who really cared about that arc?).

1.Weirdmageddon 3: Take Back The Falls: Don’t be surprised that this is number 1. Wow, what a wonderful way to end this show! This 1 hour episode has everything that I wanted in the finale. Returning characters, call backs, good payoffs and a satisfying ending. The battle between the Mystery Shack robot and Bill’s minions is awesome. Bill Cipher’s death was epic and the way the Pines Family defeat is great even if it had nothing to due with the wheel prophecy. The ending was so heartwarming and a little sad since it’s the end of the show. To be honest I have no problems with this episode at all.  Take Back the Falls is in my opinion not just the greatest episode of Gravity Falls but the greatest series finale of any cartoon I have ever seen.

Steven Universe In Too Deep Part 4 Review

Steven Universe In Too Deep has finally come to a close. I think Peridot’s smile from Barn Mates sums up my feelings about this episode. The episode continues from where Barn Mates ended. Five rubies pop out of the spaceship and decide to search for the leader of the Earth mission in the barn. Steven tells them to play a baseball game so that they can enter the barn if they win.

The chemistry between Ruby and Sapphire takes a new level of sweet which becomes a problem for baseball team. The scene where Sapphire runs home to Ruby is adorable (Come to ME!). I also enjoyed the 5 rubies. They have different and enjoyable personalities. I loved watching the gems play off each other and the comedy also really helps. I like how it turns out that the Rubies were just looking for Jasper which kind of shows how little importance peridots have on Homeworld.

This is one of my favorite episodes of the show now. I’d probably place this as my second favorite episode.

Verdict:
+ Ruby and Sapphire
+ The 5 rubies
+ The Comedy
+ Gems playing baseball
+ Ending twist

Score: 9.5

X-Men: Apocalypse Review

xmen

X-men is a very creative superhero concept. X-men movies have had there ups and downs. This is somewhere in the middle.

Quicksilver is great and his running fast scene was funny and awesome. I’m glad he was brought along on the adventure rather then sending him home. I see so many superspeed scenes with the song Sweet Dreams on YouTube because of this. Some of the new characters like Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Nightcrawler were good addictions. Considering that that the previous movies either killed them off early or not appear at all.

Magneto actually has a sad moment where his new family is accidentally killed by the police and he uses his daughter’s locket to slash the throats of the police. It’s a really sad moment considuring all he’s gone through. Sadly, his role is demoted when he becomes a horsemen. That’s a problem that I  have with this movie. The four horsemen feel undeveloped and not that interesting. Storm redemption didn’t do much, and Psylocke and Angel were just there just so there would be four and while the light sword and sharp feathers are cool it doesn’t help much.

Another problem I have was the scene where the x men were captured by Stryker. Theres no purpose to him in the story.  Though it does lead up to a good Wolverine cameo. He doesn’t have to be in the spotlight all the time.

I actually really liked the climax. It starts off with one on one with the x men and four horsemen. Then a part with Nightcrawler teleporting everyone out of the plane before Angel attacks and the plane crash. Then an epic Mind battle between Xavier, Apocalypse, and Jean Grey, and finally the combine power of Magneto, Storm, Cyclops, and Jean Grey (phoenix) to finish off Apocalypse.

There’s a scene where the x men just got out of Return of the Jedi and discuss which is the best Star Wars movie. Jean Grey comments saying that the third one is always the worst. That’s this one in a nutshell. I don’t think it’s bad, it’s  just not as good as Days of Future Past and even Deadpool. Still a good follow up to X-men.

Verdict:
+Quicksilver
+Magneto’s tragedy
+Wolverine cameo
+Climax
-The four horsemen
-Stryker
