2022 Recap Part 3

Since I have a Letterboxd account now I’m probably retiring the recap posts.

Movies:

Three Thousand Years of Longing: Too weird for my taste. C

Pinocchio (remake): A terrible Disney remake has none of the heart of the original. D-

Wendell and Wild and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio: Wonderfully animated stop motion movies. A-

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story: The funniest movie of the year. A

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever: Not as good as the first one but it had a great tribute to Chadwick Boseman. B+

My Father’s Dragon and Strange World: Good animation but kind of the weakest work of their studios in a while. C+

Glass Onion A Knives Out Mystery: A perfect sequel to a perfect film. A+

The Fabelmans: As a fan of Spielberg, I was kind of underwhelmed by this film. B-

Spirited and A Christmas Carol (Netflix): Pretty good adaptions of A Christmas Carol. B-

A Christmas Story Christmas: The true Christmas Story sequel. B-

Violent Night: A fun Die Hard style Christmas action film. B

Avatar the Way of Water: Same story beats from the first one. but with better visuals. B

Puss in Boots the Last Wish: Best Dreamworks movie since Kung Fu Panda 2. A

TV:

Rick and Morty season 6: This might be my favorite season.

Oddballs: Huge fan of TheOdd1sOut so I really had fun with this.

Inside Job and Dead-End season 2: Really good cartoons with great animation and great characters. Such a shame that they were cancelled.

The Owl House season 3: Such a great season premiere, will share more of my thoughts once season 3 is over.

2022 recap part 2

Movies:

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness: This movie is half Marvel, half Sam Raimi movie with great visual effects. A-

Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers: Weird movie that I didn’t think Disney would make. B

Top Gun: Maverick: Similar plot beats from the first but the flying scenes are an improvement. B+

The Bob’s Burgers Movie: A love letter to the show. A

Jurassic World: Dominion: The Rise of Skywalker of the series. Why did they introduce goddamn giant locus?! D

Lightyear: Bland planet but Chris Evans makes Buzz very likable. A-

Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe:  80 minutes of these two causing mayhems while finally scoring in the end. C

Elvis: Visually amazing and amazing acting. A

Thor: Love and Thunder: While not as good as Ragnarok, it still has Watiti’s charm. A-

Nope: Scary good fun, my type of horror movie. A

Luck: An absolute generic animated movie that lucky enough to be free. D

Bullet Train: Enjoyable characters and fun action. B

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie: Nice animation but not a fan of asshole Leonardo. C+

TV:

Moon Knight: While Steven Grant is likable, I was not a fan of this show. Marc’s mother pissed me off so much.

Kenobi: Not bad but it felt like just another Star Wars show.

Dead End: Paranormal Park: This surprised me. I like the amusement park setting and the characters were very likable.

Solar Opposites season 3: Probably the best season of the show so far. One of the best episodes involves them waiting in a line.

Primal season 2: This really is Genndy Tartakovsky’s best work. My favorite episode is episode 5 which I won’t spoil.

The Harley Quinn show Season 3: The idea of Joker having a normal healthy family is funny alone but having him run for mayor and actually being a good candidate is hilarious.

The Cuphead Show season 2: Fun, but some episodes like Say Cheese weren’t that great.

2022 recap part 1

Don’t forget I also have a Letterboxd account now so check that out if you want more in depth reviews.

Movies:

Jackass Forever: Gross, stupid, but hilarious and enjoyable fun. B

The Batman: Best Batman movie since 1989. A

Turning Red: Not the biggest in terms of scale but it’s a nice little movie with cartoonish animation. A-

Uncharted: The Uncharted series was like an action-adventure movie you can play so just making it into a movie makes very generic. C

Sonic The Hedgehog 2: An improvement from the first one that feels more true to the source material. B

Everywhere and Everything All at Once: Everything great that people said about this is true, wonderful acting, great humor, and fun action. A+

The Bad Guys: Familiar cliches aside this has some of the best Dreamworks animation. A-

Belle and Pompo the Cinephile: Two of the best anime movies and now two of my favorite movies ever. A+

TV:

Peacemaker: A fun action-packed series with a kickass theme song.

Smiling Friends: It surprised how hilarious this was. Charlie is the best character.

Kid Cosmic season 3: This season contain a plot twist I actually didn’t see coming. I d

The Cuphead Show: Pretty much exactly what I wanted from a show based on Cuphead.

Cat Burglar: A really good trivia game that actually was surprisingly difficult at times.

Amphibia season 3 and The Owl House season 2: Both mid-season premieres are some of if not the best episodes of there shows.

The Proud Family Louder and Prouder: An ok revival of a classic Disney cartoon. Dijonay is the still the worst. Sasha from Amphibia even before her redemption was a better friend.

Close Enough season 3: Still has that Regular Show charm. The Halloween episode was amazing.

Pinecone and Pony: Cute and innocent, reminds me a lot of Hilda.

Green Eggs and Ham season 2: I once wondered if The Butter Battle Book would ever be adapted and this is probably the closest we’ll ever get.

2021 recap part 3

Just so everyone knows I now have a Letterboxd account. I’ll still do posts here for movies and tv shows.

Here is a link if you want to see it: https://letterboxd.com/JacobsonCinema/

Movies:

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings: Didn’t expect this to be better than I thought. B+

My Little Pony: A New Generation: A standard My Little Pony movie with prejudice themes. C

No Time to Die: A fond farewell for my favorite James Bond. A

Dune: Great cinematography but I just couldn’t get into the characters or story. B-

Ron’s Gone Wrong: Sure, the third half goes on longer than it should but the social media premise done very well. B

Eternals: Bland characters and bland story makes this one of the worst MCU movies in recent years. C

Home Sweet Home Alone: Trash! The main character has a punchable face and the thieves are too sympathetic. D-

8-Bit Christmas: Sort of a mix between a Christmas Story and Jingle All the Way with a touching ending. B

Encanto: Weak songs but great characters and down to earth story. A

Ghostbusters Afterlife: A fun retread with an emotional ending. A-

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: How does 58 minutes count as a movie?! The animation is terrible and Greg is still an unlikable protagonist. D-

Spider-Man: No Way Home: A love letter to the Spider Man films. A

West Side Story: Great directing, cinematography and choreography. B+

Hilda and the Mountain King: Pretty much everything I love about Hilda is here. A

The King’s Man: I liked the action and the premise with the Shepard. B+

TV:

Kid Cosmic season 2: Fantos the Amassor was an entertaining villain and I liked seeing all the powers being used in very unique ways.

Amphibia season 3: Having this season take places on Earth is a great change to the status quo. I’m really excited to see what happens next year.

The Ghost and Molly McGee: Absolutely charming, cute, and fun. The characters are so likable and this is one of those shows where all the main characters are the best character.

Inside Job: The love child of Gravity Falls and Rick and Morty that’s very creative and funny. Rand Ridley is a more unlikable Rick Sanchez. I’ve never hated a character so much since Dolores Umbridge.

Animaniacs season 2: Not as strong as the first season but it had good segments.

Here’s to hopefully a better year.

2021 recap part 2

Got to see more movies this time.

Movies:

Cruella: What Maleficent should’ve been. B+

Wish Dragon: A decent adaption of Aladdin with decent animation. C

F9: Big and nonsensical action. C+

Luca: One of the simplest yet sweetest Pixar movies. A

Black Widow: This didn’t need to excist but it’s nice that they gave Black Widow her own movie. B

Space Jam A New Legacy: The most Warner Brotherish movie ever and is still a cash grab like the first. I did enjoy this one cameo that involves Taz. C

Jungle Cruise: A fun adaption of a classic ride. B+

The Suicide Squad: Best DCEU movie since Tim Burton’s Batman. A

Vivo: A nice looking waste of time with some ok songs. C+

Free Guy: Ryan Reynolds is always enjoyable and the video game references are enjoyable. B

The Loud House Movie: A cute movie from one of Nickelodeon’s most popular shows. B

Shows:

The Owl House season 2: I like how every episode progresses the story now. Also, Luamity forever!

Loki: Interesting series with an interesting lead into the multiverse. I discovered DB Cooper because of this show.

Rick and Morty season 5: Really enjoying this. More thoughts after the finale.

Behind the Attraction: As a Disney park fanatic I really enjoyed this.

Marvel’s What If: Best MCU show, I really like the ones with new character interactions especially in episode 2.

2021 recap part 1

Movies:

Promising Young Woman: She doesn’t try to get revenge until near the end when that should’ve been the whole plot. C+

Tom and Jerry 2021: The animation is fine but the story is not great. At least they don’t talk like that other movie. D+

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run: An obvious commercial for Kamp Koral but the animation is really good. B

Raya and the Last Dragon: Great worldbuilding and action. A-

Nobody: A fun action movie with a great performance from Bob Odenkirk. A-

Godzilla vs Kong: Uninteresting characters but fun fight scenes from both monsters. B

Arlo the Alligator Boy: Cute animation but it just felt like a pilot to a show. B

Mortal Kombat: Familiar but faithful. B-

Shows:

The Great North: A decent so far show from the crew that made Bob’s Burgers.

Kid Cosmic: Probably my favorite show from Craig McCracken.

Close Enough and Solar Opposites season 2: Both have the fun charm they had from season 1.

WandaVision: Great performances from the two leads and great pokes at the sitcom cliches.

Amphibia season 2: I’m looking forward to the finale.

Final Space season 3: Darker than the previous seasons. Will discuss my thoughts when season is over.

Falcon and the Winter Soldier: A darker and more mature MCU story with great character interactions. I do think John Walker’s arc was rushed at the end.

Infinity Train Book 4: Not the most epic final seasons but still has the charm of the other seasons.

2020 recap final part

Movies:

The Goonies: Got to see this in Vegas. A fun treasure hunt movie that relishes in it’s 80s charm. A

Tenet: Confusing but full of great action and twists. A-

Mulan 2020: They made Mulan too perfect instead of working hard to get strong. C-

Wolfwalkers: Great 2d aniamton and duo. A

Soul: A combination of Inside Out and Coco that still feels fresh. A

Wonder Woman 1984: Fun, corny and more colorful than the first. Though I do wish there were more 80’s music. B

Shows:

Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts: A well done conclusion to a show that I think handled discrimination better than Star vs the Forces of Evil.

Animaniacs reboot: Absolutely hilarious.

Primal season 1: Still great animaton and emotion, especially Coven of the Damned.

Hilda season 2: Just as wonderful as season 1.

Here’s hoping 2021 is a better year.

2020 recap part 3

Man do I missed movie theaters. L

Movies:
Artemis Fowl: So boring and generic. At least it was free. D

Hamilton: Technically this is just footage of the play. The songs and performances are still good though. A

Magic Camp: Basic Disney kids movie. I did like hearing Mystery Skull’s Magic though. C

Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Candace Against the Universe: Not a fan of Phineas and Ferb but it does feel like a love letter to people who love the show. I still suffers from jokes dragging.

The One and Only Ivan: A touching though predictable movie with talking animals. B

Shows:
F is For Family season 4: The addition of the Grandfather was a nice change of pace even though it ends on a bittersweet way.

Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts season 2: A big improvement from season 1. I really liked the backstory involving Scarlemagne and the twist involving Kipo’s mother.

Close Enough: It does look similar to Regular Show but it still is a lot of fun.

Amphibia season 2: I’m really liking the overarching story in this season. Will do a full review once the season is done.

The Owl House season 1: What seems to be another “girl in another dimension” show still has enough charm to be its own thing.

Infinity Train book 3: A darker and edgier season compared to the last two.

Glitch Techs season 2: Fun video game references especially one based on Five Nights at Freddy’s.

Hoops: A generic adult cartoon which generic animation and characters.

2020 recap part 2

Movies:

My Hero Academia: Heroes: Rising: Everything I love about the anime is here. A-

Onward: The fantasy modern world isn’t exactly new but the relationship between the brothers makes this a wonderful addition to Pixar. A-

Trolls World Tour: A run of the mill Dreamworks animated sequel that kind of has interesting world building but not much. C

The Willoughbys: Interesting animation and character designs though does suffer from clichés (like the misunderstanding tropes) I’ve seen before. Also the parents are awful! C+

Scoob: Felt more like a Hanna Barbara crossover with Scooby as the main character than a Scooby Doo movie. C+

Shows:

Steven Universe Future: A wonderful and emotional epilogue to one of my favorite cartoons of all time.

The Owl House: Still great, talk more once season is over.

Ollie’s Pack: A fun cartoon that caught my attention.

The Last Kids on Earth season 2: A decent but fun adaption of a kid’s book series.

Rick and Morty season 4: This might be my favorite season so far. I love most of the episodes.

Harley Quinn: One of the most fun DC adaption I’ve seen. This managed to balanced graphic violence with lighthearted fun. The characters are really enjoyable and the comedy is hilarious.

Solar Opposites: Same humor and violence from Rick and Morty with an interesting C-plot.

The Long Long Holiday: Not really new but it’s ironic that I watched this considering what’s been happening. The animation is great and cute while also not shying away from the realistic horrors of World War 2.

2020 Recap part 1

Movies:

JoJo Rabbit: Saw it again, still amazing writing and acting. A-

Birds of Prey: While the birds of prey themselves are not really interesting Harley and Blackmask help make this fun. B-

1917: Not exactly my cup of tea but I think it’s wonderfully shot and with a wonderful score from Thomas Newman. A-

Sonic the Hedgehog: A fun kids movie with good performances from Ben Schwartz as Sonic and Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik. B

TV:

Infinity Train season 2: A great continuation of this anthology show.

Harvey Street Forever season 4: Nice cute goodbye to this cute Netflix cartoon.

The Owl House: I will discuss more of this once season 1 is over but so far I’m really enjoying it.

It’s Pony: A fine Nickelodeon show.

Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts: Kipo is a very likable main character and the world she explores is very colorful and creative. It’s sort of like an apocalypse version of the world of BoJack.

BoJack Horseman season 6: A bittersweet ending that ends with a hint of hope for its main characters.

Duncanville: So far it’s your typical Fox adult cartoon but I think the charm comes from Amy Poehler and her performance as Duncan and the mom.

Glitch Techs: A fun video game themed cartoon even if it doesn’t have an overarching story.
